About My Art
After growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Kay Ross moved to Tucson for work in the early 1980s and now considers herself a semi-native of Arizona. She took a few drawing classes in the 1990’s, but it wasn’t until late 2013 that time became available to explore painting. A friend introduced her to classes in acrylic painting and she felt she had to keep painting.
Kay took numerous classes that first year and has been taking a class every week from a local artist for the last ten years. Her work has won numerous ribbons, including three first place, in juried shows. Pieces are currently in residence in New York, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Arizona, as well as the Netherlands.
She loves to paint scenes from the Sonoran Desert and Pacific Northwest Sonoran Desert landscapes, the two areas where she has lived her life. Her most recent works explore using impressionist techniques to create realistic and radiant paintings. These include blooming yuccas, falling colorful fall leaves, and a sea otter underwater releasing bubbles from its nose.
Working with acrylics on canvas, watercolor on paper, and gouache on paper, Kay paints the essence of what she is seeing and experiencing. She works to convey the essence through colors, shapes and light, creating movement and drawing us into the environment.
